Tamara Wills
Owner, Allyu Spa
Interview by Christine Mangan
Allyu Spa owner Tamara Wills presents a unique alternative to relaxation and pampering with her recently opened spa. Inspired by her journeys to Peru where she worked alongside Andean shamans developing respect and love for the Earth, Wills applies these values to her latest venture. The result is an Earth-conscious spa that not only uses environmentally-friendly products, but is constructed of sustainable materials, including cork floors and reclaimed barn wood. As to why Wills chose Chicago as the home of Allyu, the reason was simple. “This is my city,” Wills said. “There was never another option.” (allyuspa.com)
Favorite summertime activity
I wish I could say jogging on the lake, but I lean more towards eating! Taking my Vespa scooter for ice cream on a warm night, or dinner outside with friends and family.
My perfect day in the city
Spending the morning in the backyard with my boyfriend, having coffee and enjoying the birds. Then off to the Planetarium to dream about the skies a bit and walk by the lake, followed by dinner with his daughters.
Best places for a meal
Mon Ami Gabi is amazing for French, Tarantino on Armitage is cozy, and has delicious Italian and Irazu on Milwaukee has the perfect veggie burrito. All have outdoor seating too!
What others would be surprised to learn about Chicago
How attached we are to our neighborhoods! We tend to live, eat and breathe in our ‘hood.
My favorite place
Our lake is so amazing. We are perched on one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world! And we are blessed to have those that came before us safeguard it for the public. Montgomery Ward was a major participant in the legislation to leave Grant Park undeveloped, and I think he would be thrilled to see how everyone enjoys and utilizes the space.
If I had to leave Chicago tomorrow, I would mostly miss...
The people! They never cease to amaze and teach me. There’s a lot of clichés about Chicago being a ‘big city with a small town mentality,’ but I do believe it’s true that people here are dedicated to creating community and having genuine interactions.
